Cefalù is known throughout the world for its beautiful beach, for the fortress that dominates the town giving it the shape of a snail and above all for its incredible Duomo which since 3 July 2015 is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It was built starting in 1131 by will of Roger II. It is said that, having escaped a storm at sea, arriving in Cefalù dissolved the vote for the grace received and decided to build the Duomo.
The building, imposing and majestic, has on its sides two towers that give it the appearance of a fortress. According to the initial project, the Duomo was destined to have an even more dominant and important role. In fact, it was built on the upper part of the old fishing village with a view that dominated the entire coast and the surrounding area.
Inside the building, the dominant figure is surely that of Christ Pantocrator (Almighty) who in his left hand holds the book of the Gospel where he reads “I am the light of the world, he who follows me will not wander in darkness but will have the light of life”.
